History

1881:On 31 December 1881, a group of 127 businessmen and traders from Sabadell (Barcelona) founded the Bank with the purpose of financing local industry and providing it with raw materials (wool and coal) under more favourable conditions. 1907:Banco Sabadell began a new stage: it wound up the non-banking businesses to focus its activities on commercial banking. 1953:In order to preserve the organisation's independence, the shareholders constituted a share syndication agreement. 1965:Territorial expansion started, slowly spreading to the nearby towns. 1968:A pioneer in bank computing in Spain, it incorporated new technology in accounting and administrative processes. 1975:It started to expand beyond Catalonia, opening a branch in Madrid. 1978:International expansion: the first branch abroad was opened in the heart of the City of London. 1986:Introduction of remote banking: the telephone (FonoBanc) and computer (InfoBanc) were incorporated as new channels for communication and providing service to clients. 1988:Sabadell MultiBanca, subsequently known as Sabadell Banca Privada, a bank specialising in equity management and private banking was set up and the Banco Sabadell group was formed. 1996:NatWest España Group was taken over, adopting the commercial name of Solbank, at the same time entailing the incorporation of Banco de Asturias. With this, Banco Sabadell increased its dimension and operating capacity, becoming sixth in Spain's bank ranking in terms of client resources. 1998:BancSabadell Net was launched, the first Internet banking service. 2000:An exchange of shares with Banco Comercial Portugués (BCP) was formalised and "la Caixa" became the major shareholder in Banco Sabadell, until its desinvestment in 2006. Banco Herrero was incorporated in the group which consolidated its position in fourth place in the Spanish ranking of banks. 2001:Banco Sabadell was floated on the stock market, starting a new stage. 2002:Banco Sabadell has entered the new millennium with a strengthened organisation and a multi-brand and multi-channel strategy, with new business lines, a clear client-based focus and with consolidation and growth as its objectives. 2003:Banco Sabadell launches a takeover bid for 100% of the capital of Banco Atlántico, S.A. 2004:Capital increase to finance the acquisition of Banco Atlántico and the execution of the purchase. The culmination of the technological and operative integration of Banco Atlántico into the group and the creation of the commercial brand SabadellAtlántico. 2006:Acquisition of Banco Urquijo. This operation consolidates Banco Sabadell as the second private bank in Spain. 2007:Banco Sabadell acquires Miami-based TransAtlantic Bank. 2008:Strategic alliance with the insurance group Zurich. 2009:Banco Sabadell acquires Mellon United National Bank. 2010:Banco Sabadell acquires Banco Guipuzcoano. The founding of Sabadell United Bank, from the merger of Transatlantinc Bank Mellon United National Bank.
